The Problematic Issue of Lake Weeds

Possibly the biggest threat to fresh water lakes is not, as most would assume, human encroachment, but rather the out of control growth of lake weeds. Lake weeds can infect a body of water and upend the lake’s ecosystem and destroy it.

Probably one of the most beautiful things that can exist on a landscape is the traditional, blue, fresh water lake. Lakes provide many services to all that inhabit the environment a lake occupies. For fish, it provides a life giving environment. For humans, it can provide a source of drinking water, a place of recreation, and have the additional valuable effect of increasing real estate values.

Lake weeds can ruin all those things. When these weeds start to grow wildly out of control in a lake, they can cause all manner of chaos. For starters, they can destroy the fish life.

While it is true that plants provide shelter to many fish hiding from predators and the heat of the sun, out of control lake weeds and algae can upend the oxygen and kill the fish in the water. This is a wildly out of balance situation where harmony between aquatic plants and animals is disturbed due to over distribution of lake weeds.

On a side note, sometimes a human response that is overkill will result in the destruction of the lake’s ecosystem. In an attempt to rid a lake of lake weeds, humans will dump herbicides in the lake that end up killing the fish. Sometimes, the volume of herbicides dumped into the lake make the lake off limits to humans as well.

Lake weeds need to be removed from the lakes. They will cause all kinds of problems and havoc, but the response to the situation needs to be appropriate. Overkill ends up doing more harm than good.
